Notre Dame Cathedral 2018

Watercolor on Paper. 12″ x 16″. Request a print at janet@janetolsonart.com.
I started this painting in April 2019, the day of the terrible fire that caused so much damage to the Notre Dame Cathedral. I had stood in the Cathedral in 2018 looking in awe at the sculptures, stained glass and beautiful carvings. It is difficult to describe the sadness of watching images of the fire in TV news reports. I felt for my Catholic friends but also for all of us who were losing so much history and culture in the fire. It was a therapeutic exercise to recreate a detailed and tight composition of the North Choir Wall. The wall shows scenes from Jesus’ life and creates a separate space for prayer and reflection in the large cathedral.
