This oil sketch captures the magical feeling of a first deep snow in the northwestern winter. Going out in the evening, I turned and looked up the hill toward these homes and felt the warmth of the windows and imagined the families gathered inside for cocoa or games. We were all staying close to home that snowy winter and what at first seemed inconvenient quickly became a joy.
